Why the date on a certificate matters
What a purity figure means
The purity on a Janoshik report is the share of the main peak in an HPLC chromatogram. 99.5% means that 99.5% of what the detector saw was one substance and 0.5% was something else. It is not the amount in the vial: that is the separate quantity line, in milligrams. It does not by itself prove which substance the peak is: that is identity, confirmed by mass spectrometry. And it says nothing about sterility, endotoxins or heavy metals, which are separate tests.
A purity figure printed on a shop page with no report behind it is a claim, not a measurement. Between two reports, the difference that matters is rarely 99.2% against 99.8%; it is whether the report exists at all, names the seller as the client, covers this compound on its own, and is recent.
What ARA-290 is, and what it is sold as
ARA-290 is an 11-amino-acid peptide modelled on part of the erythropoietin molecule and now officially named cibinetide. Its developer took it to phase 2 trials and we found no approval for it as a medicine anywhere we checked, so a certificate is the only checkable fact about a vial sold in the UK.

A fragment modelled on erythropoietin. ARA-290, now officially named cibinetide, is an 11-amino-acid peptide designed by Michael Brines and Anthony Cerami and first described in PNAS in 2008. Cerami's company, Araim Pharmaceuticals, took it into clinical trials.
It reached phase 2 and has no approval. The largest trial was a 64-person phase 2b study in people with sarcoidosis and small nerve fibre loss, published in 2017. Smaller phase 2 studies ran in type 2 diabetes and, in Belfast, in diabetic macular oedema; the Belfast trial was terminated when the study drug expired. It holds orphan designations from the FDA and the European Commission, and the European Medicines Agency's own page says "an orphan designation is not a marketing authorisation". ClinicalTrials.gov lists no trial started since 2016.
No longer named on the WADA list. WADA's 2017 Prohibited List named ARA-290 as an example. WADA removed it for 2018, saying "current literature suggests it does not meet inclusion criteria", and the 2026 list does not name it. PubMed indexes 128 papers, 68 of them in rats or mice and 5 clinical-trial reports.
