What a purity figure means

The purity on a Janoshik report is the share of the main peak in an HPLC chromatogram. 99.5% means that 99.5% of what the detector saw was one substance and 0.5% was something else. It is not the amount in the vial: that is the separate quantity line, in milligrams. It does not by itself prove which substance the peak is: that is identity, confirmed by mass spectrometry. And it says nothing about sterility, endotoxins or heavy metals, which are separate tests.

A purity figure printed on a shop page with no report behind it is a claim, not a measurement. Between two reports, the difference that matters is rarely 99.2% against 99.8%; it is whether the report exists at all, names the seller as the client, covers this compound on its own, and is recent.

What Melanotan 2 is, and what it is sold as

Melanotan 2 is a synthetic analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone studied in pigmentation research. It is one of the most widely sold research peptides, and correspondingly one where borrowed or absent certificates are common.

A university compound whose developers walked away from it. Melanotan II was made at the University of Arizona by Hadley, Hruby and colleagues; its one human study indexed as a clinical trial is a 1996 pilot in three men. PubMed indexes 197 papers, 134 in rodents.

Licensed out, then dropped. Palatin Technologies licensed it for sexual dysfunction, stopped work on it in 2000 and developed bremelanotide instead; a 2008 settlement returned the rights to the university's licensing agent. No phase 3 trial was ever run and it was never submitted for approval.

In the UK it is illegal to sell. The MHRA has said since 2008 that unlicensed melanotan injections and nasal sprays are illegal to supply, has had more than 100 websites suspended, and has logged reports of suspected side effects. That is a stronger statement than 'unlicensed', and it applies to every UK listing.
