A licensed medicine that left the market. Sermorelin is the first 29 amino acids of human growth hormone-releasing hormone, reported in Nature in 1982 by Jean Rivier, Wylie Vale and colleagues at the Salk Institute. Serono sold it as Geref. The FDA approved it as a diagnostic test on 28 December 1990 and as a treatment for children with idiopathic growth hormone deficiency on 26 September 1997.
Discontinued in 2008. EMD Serono told the FDA in 2008 that both products were being discontinued, and the approvals were withdrawn with effect from 18 June 2009. On 4 March 2013 the FDA determined that both "were not withdrawn from sale for reasons of safety or effectiveness". The notices do not give the company's reason. In the UK, the NHS medicines dictionary records one past product, the diagnostic Geref 50, as discontinued.
An old literature. PubMed indexes 369 papers and 63 clinical-trial reports, most from the 1980s and 1990s; 17 papers have been published since 2020. ClinicalTrials.gov lists two studies that name the product, both using it as a test agent. The 2026 WADA Prohibited List names sermorelin among the substances banned in sport at all times.
